Words in the medical tourism statistics

Foreign patientinternational patient; 외국인환자
A non-Korean national treated at a Korean medical institution who is neither a subscriber to nor a dependant under National Health Insurance. This is who the Seoul statistics count: 1,755,002 in 2025. Foreign residents treated under the national insurance are not included.

A medical institution that met the requirements and registered in order to attract foreign patients. The 2015 list released by the Seoul Metropolitan Government has 1,491 with a Seoul address, mixing clinics, dental clinics, Korean medicine clinics and hospitals. The source calls them institutions "approved for medical tourism".

Specialty (by name)
The clinic list has no column for medical specialty. The fields on this site are an editorial grouping by words in the English name (Plastic, Dental, Dermatology and so on), with each clinic counted once. 291 clinics whose names show no specialty could not be grouped.

Datasets of the places featured on Visit Seoul, the city's official travel guide, published by the Seoul Tourism Organization. They hold 506 attractions, 1,373 restaurants and 327 shopping places. They are lists of what the guide features, not a census of every place in the city.

The subway station written in the transport column of the tourism lists, together with the line and the distance from an exit. This site counts the first station that appears in that column as the nearest station of the place.

Closing day
The day off written in the closing-day column of the attractions list. 157 list Monday and 156 leave the column empty. An empty column does not mean a place never closes.

Areas and calculations

Districtgu; 자치구
One of the 25 autonomous districts that make up Seoul, such as Jongno-gu, Jung-gu and Gangnam-gu. District figures on this site are counted from the district read in the address or district column of the source.

The administrative unit below a district. The clinic list gives it in English (Apgujeong-dong, Yeoksam1-dong and so on), and this site shows the names as written in the source.

A part of the whole, written as a percentage. District shares use the sum of the 25 districts as the denominator and nationality shares use the Seoul total. The source does not give shares; this site calculated them.
